File # 2023-1956

A man is in custody following an investigation that occurred after a police officer was waved down by a pedestrian in Kamloops Wednesday morning.

On Jan. 17, 2023, around 10:20 a.m., a Kamloops RCMP frontline officer was driving on Cammeray Road when he stopped for the pedestrian, who drew his attention to a man slumped over the steering wheel of a truck, idling at the end of Spurrway and Huckleberry roads. Police checks revealed the truck was reported as stolen.

With the assistance of backup, the officer took a man into custody without incident, said Corporal Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson. A search related to the investigation also led to the seizure of a firearm and ammunition.

John Wasyl Swystun, age 41, of Logan Lake, is charged with one count each of improper storage of a firearm; unauthorized possession of a firearm; unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, and possession of a stolen vehicle. His next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 20, 2023.

Anyone with information related to this or the stolen truck investigation is asked to please contact the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2023-1956.
