File # 2022-30216

Two high-end mountain bikes were shipped home after they were recently recovered in Kamloops.

On Aug. 27, 2022, police received a report of four mountain bikes stolen from the back of an RV parked on River Street, while a group of visitors slept inside. The value of the bikes was estimated at almost $30,000.

At the time, there wasn’t much information for police to go on, said Corporal Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson. Officers had distributed the photos and serial numbers of the bikes, but there was no surveillance or suspect images available.

Almost two months later on Oct. 22, 2022 a frontline officer was making patrols on the 10th Avenue when he observed a woman next to a bike and recognized it as one of the stolen. Three days later, on Oct. 25, officers received a report of a stolen bike spotted at the Sahali Mall parking lot, leading them to recover another of the four.

Two more of the bikes remain outstanding, but these two were turned over to a friend of the tourists to ship back home – at least one of which will be taking the long journey to New Zealand, added Cpl. Evelyn. This is a great example of the benefits in contacting police and reporting stolen items, even if it seems like their recovery may be a long shot.
