A Special Olympics vs Kamloops Law Enforcement softball game is hoping to hit a homerun of support for Kamloops athletes next week.

On Wednesday Sept. 14, 2022 at 6 p.m., Kamloops residents are invited to bring their team spirit to McArthur Island’s Norbrock Stadium, where the Special Olympics Softball Team will take on the Kamloops Law Enforcement Team in a game to raise awareness and funds.

It’s just a great organization that I love to support, said Kamloops RCMP Constable Sofie Winkles, one of the game’s organizers.

Cst. Winkles became involved with the Special Olympics about six years ago when as a member of the Community Policing Unit, she was responsible for organizing the Kamloops RCMP Detachment’s participation in the Summer Games Torch Run.

It was the coolest, most uplifting thing I’ve been to, said Cst. Winkles. A lot of what we (police) deal with is negative and this is just so happy and positive. The Special Olympics are just a great organization that I love to support.

Admission to the family-friendly ball game is by free-will donation. Hotdogs and drinks are available for purchase, and prizes to be won, thanks to sponsors Safeway, Dearborn Ford, Engel and Volkers, and the Knights of Columbus.

Special Olympics BC is dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities through sport. The charitable organization relies on public, corporate, and government assistance to deliver low to no cost athletic programs.
