With the 2022/2023 school year about to ring in, the Kamloops RCMP Detachment is encouraging parents to talk with their children about safety and trusting their instincts.
Reminders about safe walking, cycling, and scootering are all great things to review before the streets swell up with the busy excitement of a new school year, said Corporal Dana Napier, Kamloops RCMP Crime Prevention Unit.

Maybe go for a walk with them before school starts and verbalize what you’re doing as you do it,
suggested Cpl. Napier. If you’re approaching a busy intersection, stop and review the steps in crossing it safely.
Playing ‘What if’ games with your children before school starts can be helpful in developing their confidence in handling stressful situations they may encounter.
As parents we need to encourage kids to trust their instincts when they’re uncomfortable,
said Cpl. Napier. If something feels wrong, trust your instincts and seek the help of a trusted adult.
Being aware of your surroundings is a great way to reduce some of the risks that can come with the increased excitement and bustle of a busy neighbourhood. Keeping earbuds off, listening and looking at the traffic around you, and walking with a partner are some tips to help start the school year off safely.
Safety tips for back to school:
- Establish a code word for the family to identify a safe person in emergencies
- Children should know their home address and phone number
- On a public bus sit near the bus driver
- Walk with someone else
- Stay ‘unplugged’ and be aware of your surroundings
- Play what if games with younger children to reinforce these safety messages
