Kamloops police helped a distraught man get medical attention following an incident on the Savona River Bridge yesterday evening.

On July 5, 2022, around 6:30 p.m. Tk’emlúps RCMP Rural Detachment received a report involving a man experiencing a mental health crisis on the Savona River Bridge.

Tk’emlúps Rural RCMP attended the area and closed the highway in both directions while they attempted to negotiate with the man, said Corporal Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson.

Additional RCMP resources, including the Crisis Negotiation and Southeast District Emergency Response teams were deployed to assist, along with the BC Conservation Officer Service jet boat. Police on scene were able to convince the man to surrender before the additional units arrived. The highway reopened shortly after.

The man was safely apprehended under the Mental Health Act and immediately taken to the hospital for medical assessment and care. No charges are being recommended.
