For the first time in two years, Mounties and civilians gathered together recently to celebrate their dedication to public safety.
On June 2, 2022, the Kamloops RCMP Detachment held an Awards and Recognition Ceremony at the McArthur Island Sports Lounge. The event honoured those receiving Commanding Officer’s Commendations, Detachment Commander Appreciation Certificates, and Long-Service Medals.
In my four years as detachment commander in Kamloops, I am both impressed -- and not so surprised -- by the commitment to public safety we are here today to recognize and pay tribute to, a commitment continuously displayed by both our officers, partners, and the city’s civilians,
said Superintendent Sydney Lecky, Kamloops RCMP Commanding Officer, during the ceremony.
It is a pleasure and an honour to acknowledge these great men and women,
he added. Each person recognized, did not take the actions they did or do the job they do with the hopes of recognition.
Commanding Officer’s Commendations were awarded to seven police officers for bravery, courage, outstanding service, life-saving measures, leadership and dedication. Thirteen police officers and eight Auxiliary members received recognition for their long-service in the form of medals and certifications.
At the local level, several civilians and two police constables were presented with a Detachment Commander Certificate of Appreciation.
Civilians who were able to attend the ceremony included:
- Tanya Chandna – Columbia Street fire, leadership
- Adam Rebalkin – Member assistance with armed suspect, bravery
- Kevin McSweeney – Member assistance with resistant suspect, bravery
- Byron McDonald – Member assistance during Juniper Ridge fire, leadership
- Cliff Fregin - Member assistance during Juniper Ridge fire, leadership
The civilians recognized stepped up and displayed great leadership by helping those the community depends on to provide help,
said Supt. Lecky. Daily, police are faced with increased challenges and safety risks taken for granted. It is encouraging and reassuring to see good citizens who share our interest in public safely and realize that we can’t always do it alone.
