File # Victims of Crime Week

The day a victim has to call police could be the worst day of their life.

It could be the day they were assaulted, robbed -- it could be the day they lost a loved one tragically. During National Victims and Survivors of Crime Week, May 15-21, 2022, the Kamloops RCMP Detachment is reaching out to remind people they don’t have to find the power to move forward alone.

In Kamloops, the RCMP Victim Services Unit is available to anyone who has been a victim or witness of crime in British Columbia and their family members. The program is operated through a team of trained staff and volunteers who work with local agencies to help those affected by crime, as highlighted by this year’s theme, The Power of Collaboration.

Victim Services is a referral point for connecting people with appropriate supports, said Corporal Dana Napier of the Kamloops RCMP Crime Prevention Unit. It’s through collaborating with these community agencies that we are able to provide support for a variety of situations.
Assistance offered through the Victim Services Unit includes helping to understand the effects of a crime, emotional support referrals to other community agencies, as well as help and guidance in understanding and moving through the court process.

How trauma and loss can impact someone is different for every person, said Cpl. Napier. Even if you don’t accept the initial Victim Services referral offered by the responding police officer, you can still reach out on your own afterwards.

The Kamloops RCMP Victim Services is located at the North Shore Community Policing Office, 915 7th St., Kamloops, 250-828-3223. The North Shore Community Policing Office is open Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed for lunch from 12-1 p.m.
