Police officer assaulted during apprehension

A mental health apprehension led to the assault of a police officer yesterday by a Kamloops man.

On Monday Sept. 13, 2021, Kamloops RCMP frontline officers attended an address on the 200-block of Victoria Street to apprehend a man wanted on a Form 21 Mental Health Warrant. When police located the man, he allegedly attempted to flee, then punched in the head a police officer who stopped him.

The officer suffered a minor injury, but is expected to recover fully, said Constable Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson.
The man was released to the hospital, pending the investigation’s conclusion and subsequent charge assessment.
