File # 2021-5446

A man who tried to get into a vehicle while it was stopped in traffic was met by an off-duty police officer inside.

On February 20, around 3:40 p.m., Kamloops RCMP received a report of an unknown man trying to get inside a vehicle while it was stopped in traffic in the eastbound lanes of Columbia Street at Third Avenue. The man allegedly approached the vehicle from the south, tried to open its rear passenger door, and told its occupants to give him their stuff.

An off-duty police officer emerged from inside and arrested the man, holding him in custody until on-duty officers arrived. The man was transported to cells while police investigated; he claimed he had mistaken the vehicle for another one and thought he had been waved over.

The man was released following the investigation’s conclusion.
