Coquitlam RCMP enhances policing with seasonal patrols

With the warmer weather, the public can expect to see Coquitlam RCMP utilizing various modes of transportation to enhance community safety.

Coquitlam RCMP’s jurisdiction consists of many scenic landscapes that include lakes, ocean, parks and recreational areas that attract a significant influx of seasonal guests. To ensure the on-going safety of the community, Coquitlam RCMP utilizes all-terrain vehicles (ATV), bike and marine patrols to provide well-rounded coverage of all areas within its jurisdiction.

ATV patrols

Coquitlam RCMP uses ATVs to increase the police presence and conduct safety patrols on trails and parks within Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam, Village of Anmore, Village of Belcarra and kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) First Nation. These trained officers will be patrolling for criminal activity, fire risks, environmental damage caused by people camping illegally and community engagement.

ATV patrols allow our officers to maneuver through some of the roughest and most remote terrain, said ATV trained officer, Corporal Neil Roemer. ATVs provide our officers the versatility to get to these areas quickly while conducting enforcement, assisting search and rescue and proactive patrols operations.

Bike patrols

Bike patrol officers are highly visible and can be deployed to busy-traffic areas, parks, green spaces, remote locations and any area that is not easily accessible by vehicles. These trained officers often engage with the public, identify problem areas, provide outreach, and may attend special events.

Bike patrols are an effective way to increase community safety and foster relationship as it puts the public face-to-face with an officer, said Bike trained officer, Constable Glen Tjernagel.

Marine patrols

Coquitlam RCMP’s Rural Section conduct marine patrols to ensure public safety by enforcing the Criminal Code to remote land locations in addition to Canadian territorial seas, islands and coastal communities. As some of Coquitlam RCMP’s vast region is only accessible by boat, these marine patrols are vital to continue community safety to even the most remote areas. As the seasonal influx of recreational guests increases, marine patrols allow officers a unique vantage point while providing an opportunity to engage with the public on our waterways.

The public can expect to see us out on the water conducting proactive patrols, said Corporal Neil Roemer, supervisor for the Rural Section with Coquitlam RCMP. We can not stress enough the importance of safe boating and having the necessary equipment. We want everyone to enjoy our waterways in a safe manner.
