
BC RCMP notify the IIO BC of an incident in Coquitlam

The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Coquitlam resulting in one man’s death.
Just after 7:30 a.m. on January 17, 2022 frontline officers from the Coquitlam RCMP were called to a residential building in the 600-block of Thompson Ave for a report that a man was causing a disturbance outside the building. Officers arrived, located and arrested the man.
The man was held in custody to appear in court today, January 18. At approximately 8:37 a.m. this morning, while conducting prisoner checks, the man was found to be unresponsive. Despite life-saving efforts by police, fire and EHS, the man could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead.
The IIO BC is investigating to determine whether police actions are linked to the man’s death.
Please note that all aspects and circumstances of this incident will be the subject of independent investigation by the IIO BC. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
