Lower Mainland Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Group takes part in Operation Safe Driver Week

The Lower Mainland’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Group (LMDCVE) is proud to have contributed to Operation Safe Driver Week, an annual safety event led by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) that aims to improve road safety through education and enforcement.

Between July 8 and July 12, 2024, the LMDCVE group, in partnership with Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE), held five days of targeted enforcement involving multiple daily operations in Abbotsford, Burnaby, Delta, Port Coquitlam, and Surrey.

The initiatives focused on unsafe driving behaviour involving commercial vehicles. Commercial vehicle drivers committing driving infractions during these targeted operations were stopped and then went through full CVSA inspections.

Over the five days of enforcement, 293 commercial vehicles were inspected, resulting in:

• 147 Commercial motor vehicles being placed out of service
• 904 violations being identified

A total of 456 tickets were issued during Operation Safe Driver Week, including:

• 112 tickets issued for disobeying a traffic control device
• 79 for speeding
• 76 for using an electronic device
• 71 for failing to wear a seatbelt
• 41 for miscellaneous moving violations
• 13 for following too closely
• 2 for driving without due care and attention

These results highlight the importance of pre-trip inspections, which, done properly, would help negate many of the safety and mechanical issues we identify during enforcement, said Cst. Kevin Connolly, Burnaby RCMP's designated Commercial Vehicle Inspector and LMDCVE group coordinator. This initiative brought together multiple agencies, which continue to work together towards creating safer roads in the Lower Mainland and beyond through education and enforcement initiatives such as this one.
