Prince George, This Is What We Do

On April 24, 2021, students at Cedars Christian Elementary participated in a model police-investigation as a part of their unit on Community.

The teachers invited Cst. Jennifer Cooper to speak with the grade one students about the work police do in the community. After a short discussion about what the students thought police work is like (catching bad guys!), Cst. Cooper deputized the students and asked them to help her with some investigations at the school to find some missing items. Teachers and classroom helpers had scripts as a guide to help answer the students’ questions and acted as the complainant to the mini-investigators.

The students followed trails of clues to their missing items. Some helped their complainant find a missing lunch, others helped find missing animals hidden around the schoolyard. After all of the missing items were located, the students met once more to talk about their investigations with Cst. Cooper. There were many questions, such as what are all of those things on your belt? and can kids be arrested? that the students wanted to ask. Cst. Cooper answered as many questions as the students could ask in their time together.

It was a pleasure to be a part of the classroom and get the kids involved in something a little different. They were so excited to be deputized and to participate in an investigation. It goes a long way to building positive relationships with police, which the students can carry on with them as they get older, states Cst. Jennifer Cooper of the Prince George RCMP.
