Hiker in hospital after falling near Trent River

A hiker was rescued and taken to hospital after falling over 150 feet near Trent River.

On April 23, 2024 at 1:47 p.m. Comox Valley RCMP received a 911 call reporting that a hiker had just fallen over 150 feet at Trent River, and needed immediate medical assistance.

The 911 dispatcher immediately engaged frontline police officers, called BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS), and Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR). Two Emergency Response Team (ERT) members were working in the Comox Valley at the time, went directly to the scene, and quickly rappelled down to the victim to assess his condition. At the same time, frontline members were facilitating a landing site for the BCEHS Air Ambulance.

Our Emergency Response Team members undergo extensive training to handle high risk and diverse emergency situations such as armed standoffs; however, they also have specialized training in various rescue techniques, including rope rescue. Said Cst. Monika Terragni, Media Relations Officer, Comox Valley RCMP. Their diverse skill set and dedication were crucial in accessing the injured hiker in the challenging terrain yesterday.

Ultimately, the BCEHS Air Ambulance air lifted the hiker out of the woods and then transported him to hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Comox Valley RCMP would like to thank the public for their patience as the Inland Island Highway was intermittently closed during the rescue effort.
