Several recent incidents of young persons finding discarded plastic baggies with possible drug residue has prompted the Nanaimo RCMP to respond with some basic safety tips around proper handling and disposal of these items. The attached pictures show typical packaging of illegal drugs. Other commonly discarded items may include glass pipes, tin foil and needles.

The drugs currently being used on the streets are toxic and if mishandled or accidentally inhaled, can cause severe and in some occasions a life threatening reaction, said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

The following tips are provided for your safety:

Police officers do not need to attend to dispose of these items but they are available to answer any questions or concerns the public may have. It should also be noted that the recent change to the consumption and possession of small quantities of street level drugs, does not apply to school grounds and playgrounds. If you suspect an individual is consuming or possessing illegal drugs, at either of these noted areas, please call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
