File # Comox Valley RCMP: 21-11231 IIO BC File: 21-181

The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Comox Valley in which one individual was injured.

Just after 12:17 p.m. on July 9, a Comox Valley RCMP officer was dispatched to a traffic complaint and was conducting patrols and radar enforcement in an area between Bridges Road and Rennison Road, on Headquarters Road. The officer was driving northbound on Headquarters Road when he observed a speeding southbound vehicle north of Bridges Road.

The police officer made a U-turn and attempted to close the distance with the suspect vehicle, a dark coloured sedan. The officer later located the possible suspect vehicle after it was involved in a single vehicle collision with a utility pole, off the right side of the roadway.

The officer discovered that the vehicle was unoccupied and an individual was located in a ditch a few metres from the collision. Courtenay Fire Rescue and Emergency Health Services attended the scene and the individual was transported to hospital with serious non-life threatening injuries.

The RCMP is continuing to investigate the cause of the collision, while the IIO BC is investigating to determine whether police actions are linked to the individual’s injuries.

Please note that all aspects and circumstances of this incident will be the subject of independent investigation by the IIO BC. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
