Across the country theft of catalytic converters has risen. In 2015 ICBC received 146 Catalytic converter theft claims within BC, this rose to 1,546 in 2020.

What is a catalytic converter?

Catalytic converters are part of a vehicle’s exhaust system, they were first used in the mid 1970’s. The purpose of the converter is to make car exhaust from internal combustion engines less toxic.

What makes a catalytic converter so appealing to thieves?

• The car part is targeted for the precious metals (rhodium, palladium and platinum) contained inside, the price of these metals has significantly increased resulting in an increase in theft.
• Catalytic converters are easy to access, they are located externally and can be reached from underneath your vehicle. Vans, SUVs and hybrid vehicles are at greater risk because the vehicle sits higher off the ground so the converter is easier to access from below.
• Catalytic converters are not marked with any identification.
• They are quick to remove, within minutes the converter can be taken.
• Legislation to monitor the sale of the devices to scrap metal dealers is being explored.

How can you deter theft:

• Whenever possible park in a secure garage or compound, if this isn’t an option park in a well-lit and well-populated area.
• Park so it is difficult to gain access under your car. When possible park against a wall or closer to lower vehicles.
• There are products designed to deter catalytic converter theft, including wire cages, alarms and straps.
• You can also discuss options with your mechanic. The bolts can be welded and an identification number could be etched onto the car part making it more difficult for thieves to sell.
• Business owners should secure their vehicles behind locked fences.
• Vehicles can be parked close together to make access more difficult.
• Install good lighting and functional security cameras that you know how to use.

If you see something, say something!

Typically a cutter of some sort is required to remove the catalytic converter, resulting in loud noises. If you hear or see suspicious activity near parked vehicles report it to the police. If the suspicious activity is currently in process call 9-1-1. If the person of concern has left call the non-emergency 604-945-1550.
