On Tuesday, March 9th, 2021, Richmond RCMP conducted an outreach project near the intersection of Westminster Hwy and Buswell Street, in conjunction with ICBC’s month-long campaign against distracted driving.

As part of the project, the City of Richmond provided a large electronic board, which was set up with the flashing message Police Ahead. Stay Off Phone. Despite this, volunteers and members of the Richmond RCMP Traffic and Crime Prevention Units handed out nearly a dozen violation tickets and written warnings for cell phone use.

Corporal Ian Henderson said, The warning signs couldn’t be more obvious, and yet some people still aren’t getting the message. Leave the phone alone, said Henderson.

ICBC reports that 78 people die each year in British Columbia in collisions related to distracted driving. In the Lower Mainland, distracted driving accounts for an average of 25 deaths each year.

Distracted and inattentive driving is responsible for more than one-quarter of all crash fatalities, making it the second leading contributing factor in crash fatalities. This is why police in Richmond and around the province are cracking down on distracted drivers, said Henderson.

Local ICBC road safety coordinator Harvey Kooner said, Even short glances away from the road increases your risk of crashing. Make sure you have everything you need before hitting the road. Staying focused when you drive should be your top priority. Leave your phone alone, said Kooner.

Richmond RCMP will continue to crack down on distracted driving all month long.
