The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP and School District 22 are extremely excited to announce the return of the Jean Minguy Memorial RCMP Youth Academy.

The Academy, a collaboration between Vernon School District 22 and the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP Detachment kicks off on Sunday, May 8th and runs through to graduation on Saturday, May 14th, 2022. This fully immersive, unique work experience program provides students aged 16-18 an opportunity to explore their career interests in law enforcement in a hands-on, simulated police academy format.

The Academy’s name honours RCMP Constable Joseph Martial Maurice Jean Minguy who lost his life while on duty in Vernon on June 3rd, 2005.

Over the course of the 6 nights and 7 days, the 27 selected candidates will train, learn, eat, and sleep together at the Vernon Army Camp. They will navigate simulated police scenarios, complete daily physical training, learn foot drill, and will receive basic instruction in police tactics, use of force, law, community policing principles, and related academics.

A number of guest presenters attend to give the students a closer look at various specialized units within the RCMP such as, Police Dog Services, Underwater Recovery Team, Indigenous Policing Services, Emergency Response Team, Forensic Identification Services, and others. Partner agencies such as BC Prosecution Service, Vernon Fire Rescue Services, and BC Emergency Health Services will also attend.

This year, we are fortunate to host a special presentation by Sgt Brenda Winpenny, spokesperson for the BC Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit. Sgt Winpenny will provide an overview of CFSEU-BC including their mandate as the provinces anti-gang agency, the different units that make up CFSEU-BC, history of the gang landscape in B.C. and an in depth look at their education, awareness and prevention initiative, End Gang Life.

We are please to extend an invitation to our media partners to attend the Sgt Winpenny’s presentation. Following the presentation, there will be an opportunity to interview and photograph Academy presenters, instructors, and participants.
