The Campbell River RCMP were called to assist the Campbell River Fire Department with a suspicious fire in the bush on Highway 28 at approximately 8:00 pm on October 8th, 2020.
The fire was in the forest behind the Vineyard Christian Fellowship Church which was part of the Greenways Land Trust.
The fire started at a homeless encampment that was well known to the local police. Although a sizeable encampment with a semi permanent structure the area had been home to only two people.
The ensuing investigation was able to determine that the residents of the camp were not injured in the blaze. The fire had been the result of a homemade fireplace that managed to set the structure alight.
Fortunately the resident's were not injured, said Cst Maury Tyre.
It is however a reminder of the safety concerns that can be posed with makeshift structures and encampments. In a situation such as this, not only was there a risk to the campers, but to the forest, nearby buildings if the fire spread, and to the people of the Campbell River Fire Dept. who had to fight the fire in a very tricky location.
If you wish to report a crime, please call the Campbell River RCMP at 250-286-6221 or in an emergency call 911.
