Diving incident
At a little after noon on January 18th Quadra RCMP were notified of a commercial sea urchin diver that had failed to surface after 40 minutes of being in the water off Cape Mudge. The diver had been down for 55 minutes at the time of the report. Quadra officers were en-route when they were advised by West Coast Marine RCMP officers that the diver was located. The diver advised they had surfaced early and were unable to signal to the dive boat due to increasing fog and snow. The diver tried to use that air horn but the dive boat didn't hear it. The diver then lost sight o the boat in the 4.5 knot current and drifted for approximately 40 minutes before being able to swim to West Shore Steep Island where she was rescued. The diver was in good health and was transported to her dive boat by West Coast Marine.
Cyclist issue
On January 30th, staff at a tree cutting service reported that motorists and cyclists were not following direction of flaggers, making for a hazardous work environment. Crew advised that there was some confusion with motorists who were unable to see the flaggers due to being obstructed by a hill, however, the complainant advised the biggest issue was a cyclist who refused to stop. The cyclist, who was in a green or yellow reflective vest, refused to listen to verbal direction to stop and proceeded to cycle through the site while crews were cutting down dangerous trees. Because the cyclist refused to listen to direction, the crew had to temporarily cease work to address the risk posed by the complete disregard of numerous signs, flashing lights, and pylons. Officers were unable to obtain more information regarding the cyclist, but did stay on scene to ensure cyclists and motorists were following flagger direction.
