File # 2021-166

A large number of police resources were mobilized Monday morning after RCMP responded to a report of a man, armed with a handgun, seen on foot in the area of the Ashcroft Indian Band.

On February 8, 2021 just before 8 a.m., Ashcroft RCMP responded to a weapons complaint, after an armed man was reportedly observed running through a field in the area of New Ranch Road. As part of their initial response, front line officers established an area of containment around the Ashcroft Indian Band, which included the closure of Cornwall Road and a portion of Highway 97.

Due to the nature of the incident the Southeast District RCMP Critical Incident Commander was contacted and the Emergency Response Team was deployed to respond to the region, states Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey, spokesperson for the BC RCMP in the Southeast District.

The police investigation led to the RCMP focussing on a particular property within the containment area.

With the assistance of ERT and RCMP Police Dog Services a 35-year-old man surrendered peacefully to police and was taken into custody without incident. He now faces a number of potential firearms and threats related charges and remains in police custody at this time.

Police have since recovered a replica bb gun and the criminal investigation continues.

Anyone with any additional information is asked to contact the Ashcroft RCMP at 250-453-2216.
