File # 2020-5826

The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident which has resulted in injury to one man.

Just after 5 p.m. on November 18, frontline officers from the Rural Nelson RCMP received a 911 call to respond to a residence in the 1400-block of Ash Street, Nelson BC for a report that an intoxicated man was causing a disturbance and refusing to leave.

When an officer arrived at the residence he located the man outside. When the officer attempted to take the man into custody, the man resisted and a struggle ensued. With assistance from a second responding officer, the man was taken into custody and transported to hospital for assessment of injuries.

IIO BC is investigating to determine whether police actions are linked to the man’s injuries. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.

Please note that all aspects and circumstances of this incident will be the subject of independent investigation by the IIO BC. For more information about the IIO BC and media updates, you can visit its website at www.iiobc.ca.
