Safety reminders this October

Surrey

Surrey RCMP is encouraging residents to make safety a priority throughout upcoming celebrations and festivities in October.

Diwali and Halloween are quickly approaching, which often leads to an increased number of calls for service to police and bylaws. Traditionally a large number of the reports involve noise concerns, fireworks, and parking complaints.

As per City bylaws, fireworks are not permitted to be used in Surrey without a permit granted by the Surrey Fire Service Fire Prevention Branch. Go to the City of Surrey website to learn how to obtain Fireworks Permits and additional information on Fireworks Bylaws. Those caught selling or setting off fireworks are subject to fines and seizure of the fireworks.

If you have concerns regarding the misuse of fireworks in your neighborhood, contact Surrey Bylaws at 604-591-4370 (operating until midnight on Oct 24 and Oct 31). Please do not use 911 for fireworks related concerns, 911 is reserved for emergencies only.

We want to ensure the safety of everyone, so we are reminding pedestrians to use marked crosswalks, wear visible reflective clothing and ensure that drivers see you before you cross the street.

Everyone has a role to play in ensuring pedestrian safety. Drivers should be extra mindful of the increased number of pedestrians during Diwali and Halloween. With the decreased daylight hours, it can be more challenging to see pedestrians, so it is important to slow down and remain focused when you are behind the wheel.

We are asking members of our community to be extra vigilant on our roads with the increased foot and vehicle traffic, says Cst. Sarbjit K. Sangha Media Relations Officer Surrey RCMP. Our police officers will be out in the community to help ensure that celebrations remain safe for all to enjoy.
