Sidney RCMP respond to weapons call at local business

Sidney RCMP officers responded to a local business after it was alleged that a man was threatening another individual with a firearm. 

On the morning of July 26, 2021 Police responded to the 2500 block of Beacon Avenue after receiving a 911 call where it was alleged that a man was in possession of a handgun and had pointed it at another individual during an argument. 

"Police officers take any type of violence seriously but extra precautions must be taken in any instance where a firearm is alleged to be present. Thanks to the diligent work of unformed patrol officers this event was resolved quickly and safely. We believe that this report was a case where the man was holding an item that resembled a pistol and that the 911 caller mistook the item for a real gun." said Corporal Andres Sanchez, Media Relations Officer at the Sidney/North Saanich RCMP.

The man was arrested, but subsequently released without charges after police conducted a thorough investigation. No firearm was located by police and this event is believed to be an isolated incident. Both individuals in this event are known to each other and there is no ongoing concern for public safety.
