File # 2023-44591/2023-43785

The Kamloops RCMP Detachment is warning the public about a scam circulating locally, featuring threats and gruesome images.

In just more than a week, local police have responded to at least two reports from residents who received a text message and threats from someone who claimed to be a member of the cartel. In both cases, the scam was identified before anyone was defrauded.

The wording and circumstances surrounding the scam may differ slightly, but include the common claims of being part of the cartel, a demand for payment, and threats of harm accompanied by images depicting graphic violence, said Corporal Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson.

The fraud is known to police and has circulated in other parts of the country, as well as in Kamloops previously. Residents are encouraged to contact their local detachment or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre if they’re unsure if something is a scam, and to talk about prevention with their loved ones.

Seeing such images can be very upsetting and those who receive them may feel extremely intimidated into complying with the demands that accompany these threats, said Cpl. Evelyn. It’s very important that you don’t send any money, block the number, and contact police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre to discuss what you have received.

Anyone in Kamloops who has been defrauded or suspects they may be the victim of a scam is asked to please contact the local detachment at 250-828-3000 or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
