The Kamloops RCMP Detachment responded to approximately 423 calls for service from Friday April 14, to 9 a.m. on Monday April 17, 2023. Below are some highlights from those reports.

Obstruct, assault police investigation

What started as a check on a man who appeared unconscious led to an obstruction and assault police officer investigation.

On April 14, 2023, around 10:52 a.m., a Kamloops RCMP frontline officer was making patrols for a theft suspect on the 700-block of Fortune Drive when he came across a man who had his rear-end fully exposed and pointed upward on the walkway leading to a restaurant. The officer approached the man, who was actually awake, and began investigating. The man was arrested for committing an indecent act and for obstructing a police officer by allegedly providing a false name.

During the arrest, the suspect allegedly attempted to assault the officer and fled, but two-plainclothes police officers from a neighbouring detachment witnessed the incident and were able to capture the suspect following a brief foot pursuit.

The suspect was transported to cells and later released with conditions and a court date, with charge recommendations anticipated as part of the assessment and approval process.

Vehicle crash leads to capture of wanted man

A man wanted on warrants was captured by Kamloops RCMP frontline officers after they received a report of a vehicle crash on the North Shore.

On April 14, 2023, around 5 p.m., police were called to the area of Alexis Avenue and Singh Street where a truck had struck a median, causing its rear tire to come off, and two people fled from the vehicle on foot. Officers located an intoxicated suspect in the area who was wanted on warrants out of Fort St. John, and arrested him.

The man was taken to hospital for assessment, then transported to cells for a bail hearing related to the warrants, during which he was remanded.

Weapons offence

Kamloops police arrested a man after he allegedly attempted to steal, then displayed a weapon, and fled in a taxi.

On Friday April 14, 2023, around 3 p.m., Kamloops RCMP frontline officers responded to a report of a theft in progress at a commercial location on the 1300-block of the West Trans Canada Highway. The suspect allegedly revealed a weapon before leaving in a taxi. Police located the taxi and conducted a traffic stop on McGill Road. A man and a woman known to police were arrested and a large machete-style knife was seized during the investigation.

The woman was released without process; the man received a court date and conditions, with charge recommendations anticipated as part of the assessment and approval process.

Officers assaulted during apprehension

A police officer was assaulted while responding to a call for a person experiencing a mental health crisis.

On Saturday April 15, 2023, around 9:20 p.m., Kamloops RCMP frontline officers attended an address on Lethbridge Avenue to assist ambulance, who had initially been dispatched to the call for service. Police attended and located a person in need of medical assistance who was behaving violently. The person was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and taken into custody, at which point they assaulted a police officer.

The person was taken to hospital for assessment and care. The police officer received medical treatment for a non-life threatening injury.

Police presence on Seymour

Police are investigating an assault, sexual assault, and uttering threats report after being called to an address on Seymour Street Sunday morning.

On April 16, 2023, around 7:35 a.m., Kamloops RCMP frontline officers attended the 600-block of Seymour Street for a report of a man uttering threats involving a weapon. Multiple police officers attended. As part of the investigation, it was revealed that no weapon was presented, but a suspect was identified and arrested for alleged offences including assault, sexual assault, and uttering threats.

The suspect was released with conditions and a court date, pending the investigation’s conclusion. Anyone who witnessed or has information related to this incident is asked to please contact the Kamloops RCMP Detachment and reference file number is 2023-12876.
