Man sentenced for firearms possession and drug trafficking in the Comox Valley

A man has been sentenced after one of the largest fentanyl seizures in recent history here in the Comox Valley.

On October 2nd, 2021, the Comox Valley RCMP responded to a report of a single vehicle roll over in Royston, BC. Upon arrival, police found no one in the area, but located the vehicle. Bystanders reported seeing a male, believed to be the driver, toss a black bag into the bushes before walking off. Police located the bag, filled with 1.2 kilograms of fentanyl, 140 grams of methamphetamine, an ounce of cocaine, and $2800 in Canadian currency.

In an attempt to draw police out of the area, police received a swatting call. The phone number used to make the call was associated to the registered owner of the vehicle involved in the rollover which assisted with quickly determining the call false.

As police continued patrols through the area, they located the driver inside another vehicle. He was arrested and still in possession of the phone use to make the swatting call. Police searched the vehicle and located two firearms (12 Gauge shot gun and a .22cal rifle) stored in a bag located in the trunk.

Kyle Thomsen was arrested and charged with multiple offences, including possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a firearm contrary to an order, and other firearm-related offenses.

Now that Mr. Thomsen has been sentenced, we want to bring this investigation to the attention of the public for two reasons, said Cst. Monika Terragni, Comox Valley RCMP Media Relations Officer. First, the observations made by witnesses at the scene were integral to the attending officers being able to quickly locate and seize valuable evidence. Second, the amount of fentanyl seized equates to approximately 12,000 doses, all of which could have been potentially lethal.

Thomsen was sentenced to 1587 days in jail and is currently in custody serving that sentence.

The Comox Valley RCMP would like to thank the public for their assistance in this investigation and remind everyone to report suspicious activity to the police immediately.
