Today the Special Committee on Reforming the Police Act released their report, Transforming Policing and Community Safety in British Columbia. I and a number of representatives from the BC RCMP appreciated the opportunity to present on a variety of topics including training, urban and rural policing, systemic racism, reconciliation, and the overall challenges we are facing around mental health and addiction related calls for service.

We will take the time to fully analyze and review the Committee’s report and their recommendations. Until that fulsome review is completed we won’t speculate on next steps. Discussions around the role and future of policing are not limited to BC and includes considerations such as governance, accountability, service delivery and funding. Efforts are already underway to evolve, modernize and enhance policing.

The RCMP has a complex role in BC as we deliver services at the municipal, provincial and federal level. The RCMP contract extends to 2032 and we look forward to continuing to work collaboratively with our contract partners. We value the many strong relationships we have with our Indigenous, Regional District and Municipal partners and stakeholders.

I am very proud of the RCMP team that works incredibly hard everyday to keep BC communities safe and secure and we remain committed to doing so.
