Richmond RCMP and CN Police promote rail safety during International Level Crossing Awareness Day

On June 5, 2025, in recognition of International Level Crossing Awareness Day, Richmond RCMP’s Road Safety Unit joined forces with CN Police for a joint enforcement operation aimed at promoting safety around railway crossings.

During the operation, Richmond RCMP officers laid 20 charges and issued six additional warnings. Most violations involved drivers failing to obey traffic control devices, an offence under section 125 of the Motor Vehicle Act.

Community Policing Volunteers played an important role in the day’s activities by checking 683 vehicles and issuing 69 warning letters to raise awareness about railway crossing rules and the dangers of non-compliance.

Our partnership with CN Police supports our commitment to public safety, said Sergeant Eric Baskette, Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit. Rail crossings are part of many daily routes across Richmond, and it’s critical that drivers follow the rules to avoid tragic outcomes.

Rail safety tips for drivers and pedestrians:

• Always stop when railway signals are activated.
• Never try to beat a train at a crossing.
• Never attempt to drive or walk under or around a closing or closed gate.
• Never stop on the tracks.
• Look for a second train before crossing multiple tracks.
• Keep children and pets close around railway property.
