BC Highway Patrol shows Terrace Secondary Students an up-close view of impaired driving consequences

Blood, injuries, twisted metal, and tears.

It was all part of a mock collision set up by BC Highway Patrol, and student actors, to show young people the consequences of a head-on impact caused by an impaired driver.

On May 26, 2025, BC Highway Patrol worked with Terrace RCMP, Terrace Emergency Health Services (EHS), and Terrace and Thornhill Fire Departments, to stage the mock collision for the benefit of students at Terrace Caledonia Secondary School.

This is supposed to be a very happy and positive time in their lives, says Sergeant Shawn McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol in Terrace, BC. But all too often, emergency responders are called to deal with real collisions involving young people from our communities. Our hope is that this event influences young people to make good decisions when driving or being passengers.

BC Highway Patrol and its partners met with students before and after the collision to discuss typical injuries, the behaviour of people who are intoxicated, and how thoughtless actions can have permanent consequences.

More than 100 students were part of the event. Makeup artists worked with seven drama student volunteers to bring realism to the roles of the impaired driver and their victims, while Pronto Towing of Terrace provided the vehicles.
