Search for man missing after boating accident

On April 22, 2025 at approximately 6:15 p.m., West Shore RCMP responded to a report of an unoccupied boat in the ocean at Finlayson Arm. The boat could be seen while standing on shore near the 200 block of Trans Canada Hwy.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Victoria (JRCC) was contacted and Canadian Armed Forces and Canadian Coast Guard Search and Rescue (SAR) assets were deployed. An extensive search was conducted last night and continues this morning with the use of boats and aircraft.

Police determined there were 3 occupants on the boat who were thrown over board during a boating accident. Two occupants of the boat, a mother and infant, were located on shore and rescued. They were taken to hospital to receive care.

One man, 43-year-old Ryan Mazar, has been declared missing.

JRCC Victoria and SAR alongside West Shore RCMP are continuing the search for missing person Ryan Mazar today near Finlayson Arm. The public can expect a large presence of search and rescue officials in the area including aircraft patrols.
