Daajing Giids RCMP knows how to throw a party and raise funds to benefit the entire community.
On September 21, 2024, the Daajing Giids RCMP hosted a Regimental Ball, the first in over 30 years, inviting members of the community, RCMP senior management and the public to participate in a fun night of RCMP traditions, Haida cultural presentation and festivities. The event was held at the Skidegate Community small hall
.
Over 140 tickets were sold with all remaining proceeds of $5,000 were donated to the Jesse Jones Memorial Fund, a local charity created after the loss of Haida artist Jesse Jones, who suffered a medical emergency in 2011 while on vacation in Thailand. Jesse Jones Memorial Fund touts itself as a pay-it-forward organization who gives financial gifts to community members, causes, events and memorials.
The event was about more than a celebration,
said Detachment Commander Sgt. Chris Manseau. It was about honoring tradition, culture, and carrying on the generous spirit of a local artist who inspired and helped so many. The evening not only uplifted our community, but really united us closer
he added.
The event’s success and the many compliments on the beautiful decorations are a testament to the dedication and hard work of the detachment employees and community volunteers, who spent countless hours bringing to life the exquisite vision of the Detachment Office Manager, Bev Yovanovich.
Bev took the lead on decorating and her signature pink flair shone through in every detail,
Manseau stated. After the event, local members and even some guests, stayed late into the morning hours to help with cleanup as the venue was needed again the next day. Haawa to everyone who attended and pitched in to make the event a true success.
