Welcome to the Mission RCMP Community Connection for February 24 – March 3, 2025
Here’s a snapshot of some of the work we did last week:
- Calls for service last week: 348
- Proactive patrols of identified hot spots: 36
- Curfew checks: 10
Calls of interest:
Around 5:30 pm on February 26, an 18-year-old was struck by a car at the intersection of 11th Avenue and Taulbut Street. The male had been riding an electric scooter when he reportedly rode into the intersection without stopping, and was struck by a passing vehicle that could not stop in time. The male – who was not wearing a helmet – was not seriously injured, but did experience concussion-like symptoms, and was transported to hospital. The investigation is still ongoing, although the initial indications are that the vehicle was not speeding, and that the scooter-rider began crossing the road unexpectedly. With an increasing number of youth using electric scooters, Mission RCMP encourage parents to remind their children of the basics of safe operation, and to always wear a helmet.
Two impaired collisions occurred on the night of February 28 to March 1. The first happened around 6:15 pm, when a grey Toyota Matrix rear-ended another vehicle on Lougheed Highway near Haig Street. An officer attended and immediately noted symptoms of impairment on the driver of the Matrix. The male driver from Mission failed two roadside screening device tests. Then shortly after 4 am that night, a passing motorist called police after seeing a white Toyota Corolla in the ditch on Lougheed Highway between Manson Street and Coleman Street. The female driver of that vehicle also failed a roadside screening device test. The drivers from both of these incidents received 90-day driving prohibitions and 30-day vehicle impounds. Fortunately, no one was injured as a result of these collisions.
On the afternoon of February 27, Mission RCMP were notified of a suspicious man going door-to-door in the area of 11th Avenue and Topper Drive, purporting to be conducting furnace inspections. The man stated he was from a company conducting furnace inspections on behalf of the government, and persistently asked to be let into people’s homes to check their furnace’s energy efficiency rating. He was unable to provide a business card or any other credentials. The man was described as a tall South Asian male, wearing a grey jacket, blue hoody, and jeans. Police recommend that you verify the credentials and authenticity of any door-to-door salespersons before providing any personal information or deciding whether to allow them into your home.
During the overnight hours of February 27-28, Mission RCMP were conducting patrols in the area of the Hatzic Prairie, after receiving reports that ongoing illegal dumping was occurring late at night. While patrolling the area, an officer observed a white 2023 Ford Mustang travelling along Sylvester Road at a high rate of speed. The officer conducted a traffic stop, and identified the driver as a 17-year-old from Aldergrove. In addition to travelling well above the speed limit, the driver was also found to be committing numerous other infractions under the Motor Vehicle Act. The youth – whose driving behaviour caught the attention of police in various Lower Mainland municipalities recently – was issued multiple tickets.
