Man charged for assaulting police officer

A man is facing various charges after police responded to a mischief and weapons complaint Saturday morning.
Shortly after 9:00 a.m. on January 18, 2025, Cranbrook RCMP received a report of a mischief on 4 Street North near the intersection with 16 Avenue. A subsequent report was received that a male suspect had allegedly brandished a knife in a threatening manner at a Victoria Avenue business. Cranbrook RCMP quickly located the suspect who fled into the parking lot of the Tamarack Mall where he was arrested. During the apprehension and subsequent processing, the male suspect is alleged to have assaulted the arresting officers, both of whom sustained injuries.
Mohammad Abbas Wafa has been charged with 2 counts of Assaulting a Police Officer, 2 counts of Obstruct a Police Officer, one count of Mischief and one count of Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose. Wafa was held for Court and has since been released on conditions. He is next scheduled to appear in Court on February 3, 2025.
