“Spot the Target” event a timely reminder about vehicle safety

On Saturday, November 16, 2024, Prince George RCMP Traffic Safety and Community Policing officers, in partnership with ICBC and the RCMP Patrol Volunteers, were at Pine Centre Mall for their second Spot the Target event.

Participants were encouraged to look inside a parked car inside the mall and try to identify all of the potential targets that might tempt car thieves to break into a vehicle. As a reward for participating, they had the chance to enter their name into a draw for a car steering wheel lock, courtesy of ICBC.

These events are aimed at getting drivers to think about what they are leaving in their vehicle when they park it and walk away. As we get into the Christmas and winter seasons, where we often have more gear in our cars than usual, this becomes a tempting target for thieves. Items such as Christmas presents, ski or snowboard gear, and warm winter clothing are all high-value items that we’re asking people to think twice about before leaving behind, states Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, Media Relations Officer for the Prince George RCMP.

ICBC and RCMP caution people against leaving any property visible in their vehicle, as it may not be there when you return. Thieves will break in for as little as a few coins or a cigarette lighter. Typical items stolen from vehicles include purses, wallets, credit cards, cash, clothing and sunglasses. If you have to leave any items in your vehicle, try moving them to the trunk or a covered storage area while you are away from the vehicle, even if it is parked in your driveway or carport overnight.
