35-year-old man sentenced to five years in prison after 2019 hit and run that left two police officers with life altering injuries

Nearly six years after a hit and run that left two police officers with life altering injuries, a 35-year-old man has been sentenced to five years in prison.

On March 4, 2019, just before noon, an RCMP officer and Abbotsford Police officer on duty with the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Service were seriously injured in a hit and run that occurred in the 5000-block of North Fraser Way in South Burnaby.

Burnaby RCMP’s Criminal Collision Investigation Team assumed primary conduct of the investigation.

On May 26, 2022, charges were approved against Jason Kirupakaran.

On January 11, 2024, Kirupakaran was found guilty on the following charges:

• Criminal negligence causing bodily harm X2
• Fail to Stop causing bodily harm X2

On November 7, 2024, Jason Kirupakaran was sentenced to four years in relation to the criminal negligence counts, and one year consecutive in relation to the failing to remain at the scene of an accident counts, for a global sentence of five years in prison. The court also imposed a seven- year driving prohibition and a DNA order.

This was an extremely difficult and complex investigation, with many teams and police officers methodically working towards this result. I want to specifically recognize our Criminal Collision Investigation Team, which tirelessly moved this file forward over the nearly 5-year investigation.
