File # 2024-34953

The Nanaimo RCMP are continuing to investigate a fatal hit and run collision that claimed the life of Charles Tommy, a 21 year old member of Snuneymuxw First Nation. The incident occurred at approximately 7 PM on Thursday, October 24, 2024 on Harmac Road immediately east of the Cedar Road Bridge.

At this point in the investigation it appears that Charles was struck by an unidentified vehicle, which did not remain at the scene. Witnesses reported seeing Charles both standing on the shoulder and lying in the roadway before he was struck or run over. The driver of the vehicle involved may not be aware that they struck a person.

Police have taken numerous statements and collected both dash cam footage and video surveillance from the area and are actively reviewing the video in an attempt to identify the vehicle involved.

Family shared that Charles was the loving father of a 7 month old son and was known for his sense of humor, which earned him the nickname Chuckles. He was also an avid fisherman who would regularly share his catch with the Elders in the community. His parents are devastated at the loss of their eldest child and only son.

Police are requesting the driver of the vehicle involved come forward and help provide closure to the family.

At this time, the Nanaimo RCMP will not be issuing any further comment on the investigation.
