BC RCMP notifies IIO BC of an incident in Ridge Meadows

The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Ridge Meadows where one man has died.

On September 19, 2024, at approximately 7:11 p.m., Ridge Meadows RCMP received a report of a possible impaired driver near Lougheed Highway and Old Dewdney Trunk Rd in Pitt Meadows.

Officers attended and took a male into custody, reportedly without incident, and he was subsequently lodged in Ridge Meadows RCMP cell block. Shortly before midnight, during a routine cell check the man was not responsive and emergency services were called. Medical assistance was provided, but he was pronounced deceased.

The IIO BC is investigating police actions into the incident. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
