August Road Report highlights speeding, construction zone safety, and commercial vehicle enforcement

Richmond RCMP’s Road Safety Unit (RSU) continues its commitment to road safety through targeted enforcement and public education. In August, RSU and frontline officers issued a total of 787 traffic tickets, with 731 of these under the Motor Vehicle Act. Focus areas included excessive speeding and commercial vehicles, as part of an ongoing effort to reduce risky driving behaviours and ensure the safety of all road users.

August traffic enforcement summary:

Key statistics from August’s enforcement activities include:

• Speeding: 163
• Driver’s Licence infractions: 159
• Distracted Driving: 80
• Impaired Drug/Alcohol infractions: 28
• Vehicle related infractions: 200

Targeted enforcement highlights:

On August 13, RSU stopped a vehicle traveling 112 km/h in a posted 60 km/hr zone on Russ Baker Way. Driver received a violation ticket for excessive speed, and the vehicle was impounded for 7 days.

On August 16, RSU stopped a motorcyclist in violation of multiple restrictions, including riding with only a learner’s license outside of daylight hours and without a supervisor. The vehicle was towed, and multiple tickets were issued for driving contrary to licence restrictions.

August 17 saw multiple excessive speeding incidents, including a vehicle caught driving 110 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on Westminster Highway, and a motorcycle travelling 101 km/hr on No. 2 road. Both vehicles were impounded for a minimum of 7 days.

Construction zone safety

On August 14, RSU officers conducted enforcement in a 30 km/hr construction zone after receiving multiple speed-related reports from workers. Over a 3-hour period, 12 charges were issued. Richmond RCMP reminds everyone to slow down in construction zones to ensure the safety of workers and other road users.
Commercial vehicle enforcement

On August 23, RSU officers conducted commercial vehicle inspections on No. 6 Road. Officers issued 9 charges, totaling $3,688 in fines, and two vehicles were taken out of service due to critical defects.

Road Safety Initiatives

On August 15, Richmond RCMP, along with ICBC and BCAA, hosted a car seat clinic at Lansdowne Mall. The event provided caregivers with important education on car seat safety and allowed for seat checks and adjustments to ensure child passenger safety.

High collision hotspots for targeted enforcement

Richmond RCMP officers will be focusing enforcement in the following high-collision areas throughout September:

• Highway 91 through Shell Rd and Alderbridge Way
• No 3 Rd between Sea Island Way and Bridgeport Rd
• No 3 Rd between Westminster Hwy and Granville Rd
• Westminster Hwy between No 2 Rd and No 3 Rd

Drivers are urged to exercise extra caution when traveling in these areas and to always obey traffic laws.

Upcoming campaigns

September marks the beginning of our Fall Distracted Driving Campaign in partnership with ICBC. Richmond RCMP officers, alongside volunteers, will be engaging with the community to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving.
