The West Kelowna RCMP Indigenous Police Service will hold an incredible Youth Canoe Journey beginning on Monday August 26th at Powell Beach in Summerland and eventually ending at Bear Creek Provincial Park.

This is a four-day journey and is roughly 55.2kms stretching from Summerland to West Kelowna. There are 20 youth participating with adult members and chaperones from several communities assisting. Three canoes will be used for this annual journey with the youth learning valuable lessons and history along the way.

The goal of the journey is to help build a better relationship with the RCMP and aboriginal communities while educating Indigenous youth the importance of water safety. This is another opportunity for the youth to learn about a possible career in the RCMP while on their journey, said Sergeant Laura Pollock, Media Relations Officer.

Prior to the journey, the youth will receive an opening prayer and the traditional smudge will take place.

The RCMP is committed to fostering an inclusive workplace, welcomes diversity and is excited to participate in the journey.
