BC RCMP notifies IIO BC of an incident in Dawson Creek

The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Dawson Creek where one adult man sustained serious injuries.

On June 20, 2024, at approximately 8:00 a.m., Dawson Creek RCMP responded to a complaint of individuals in possession of firearms and bear spray near 8 Street and 104 Avenue in Dawson Creek. Officers were on scene immediately and took three (3) individuals into custody.

One man fled and, after a brief foot pursuit, was apprehended outside a convenience store in the 800-block of 105 Avenue. He is alleged to have been combative with police as he was being arrested. Shortly after being taken into custody, the man went into medical distress and lost consciousness. RCMP immediately requested the assistance of Emergency Health Services at the scene of the incident and initiated life saving measures. Medical care was rendered to the man at the scene who was later taken to hospital for further care. He is reported to be in critical condition, while four (4) police officers sustained physical injuries. Three (3) of the police officers involved required medical attention for their injuries.

North District RCMP’s Regional General Investigation Section out of Prince George has been assigned the lead role in the investigation of the original weapons complaint. Any persons with information or video footage who was in the area of the 800 block of 104 Avenue is asked to call police at 250-784-3700.

The IIO BC is investigating police actions in the incident. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
