File # 2024-4056

An arrest has been made after the police received a report of a man walking toward the Quesnel High School with a firearm.

On May 17, 2024, at approximately 8:15 a.m., the Quesnel RCMP received a call from students of Correlieu Secondary School reporting a man was in possession of a firearm and was walking on Anderson Drive toward the high school. The witnesses reported the man was agitated and yelling at bystanders. For safety, the high school was placed in a Hold and Secure, which is a partial lockdown of the school.

The Quesnel RCMP arrived at the school within minutes and located the man on the Correlieu Secondary School grounds with what was believed to be a handgun in his hand. The man was arrested without incident and the police seized a replica handgun.

The quick police response and arrest of this man can be credited to the students that called the police immediately when they saw the man with what they thought was a firearm, said S/Sgt. Richard Weseen, the Detachment Commander of the Quesnel RCMP. At this time, it is not believed that the man had any intention of entering the school, or harming the students.

The 43 year old Quesnel man, who is known to police, will be held in custody for a bail hearing. Charges of mischief and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose are being recommended for charge assessment by the Crown.
