The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Tsay Keh Dene where two people were located deceased and one man was shot by police.
On April 9, 2024, Tsay Keh Dene RCMP responded to a report of shots fired in a residence with injuries to multiple people.
Officers arrived at the home at approximately 10:30 p.m. and reportedly located a man with a firearm who ran into a second nearby home.
Officers set up containment and requested the North District Critical Incident Program [Crisis Negotiator Team (CNT), Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Critical Incident Commander] attend.
At approximately 12:20 a.m., on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 negotiations were initiated and remained on-going.
Following several hours of negotiations, the North District Emergency Response Team and supporting elements deployed and arrived at approximately 5:40 a.m. Negotiations deteriorated resulting in ERT deploying a chemical irritant into the residence.
The man reportedly exited the second residence with a firearm and officers discharged an extended range impact munition and their firearms striking him. First aid was provided at the scene before the man was transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Two people are confirmed to have been located deceased in the original residence of the complaint.
BC RCMP North District Major Crime is conducting a concurrent investigation into the deaths of the two deceased.
The IIO BC is investigating police actions in the incident. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information about police response will be released by police.
Please note that all aspects and circumstances of this incident will be the subject of independent investigation by the IIO BC. For more information about the IIO BC and media updates, you can visit its website at www.iiobc.ca.
