The Southeast District Major Crime Unit (SED MCU) has confirmed the identity of a man, located deceased, in a home in Creston on May 25, 2023.

On April 27, 2023, the family of Robert Unger reported to the Creston RCMP that he was missing and as a result an investigation into his whereabouts was initiated. Creston RCMP’s investigation surrounding Mr. Unger’s disappearance, led to the discovery of a body in a residence on Elm Street in Creston, BC. At the time of the discovery a female was taken into custody but has since been released without charges while the investigation continues.

Following an autopsy, the BC Coroners Service and investigators have confirmed that the remains located in the Elm Street residence were those of 72-year-old Robert Unger. Mr. Unger’s death is being categorized as suspicious and his death as a result of foul play. Mr. Unger’s cause of death will not be released, at this time, to protect the integrity of the investigation.

Police are revealing Robert Unger’s name to further the investigation, said Staff Sergeant Jason Smart, NCO i/c Southeast District Major Crime Unit, BC RCMP Major Crime Section. As a result of the time that has passed, between Mr. Unger being reported missing and the discovery of his remains, investigators are asking anyone who had contact with Mr. Unger or who has information that may help in determining Mr. Unger’s activities to please contact police as soon as possible.

Since the discovery of Mr. Unger’s remains, numerous police officers have been working to collect evidence related to this investigation, including members of the SED MCU, Forensic Identification Service members from Nelson and Cranbrook and Creston Detachment GIS and General Duty members. The BC Coroners Service is conducting a concurrent investigation.
