Stolen vehicle recovered after spike belt deployment
On February 11th, Ashcroft RCMP were notified of a theft of a vehicle from the Logan Lake area that had just occurred. The vehicle was then seen in the Merritt area, heading along Highway 8 toward Highway 1 – immediately south of Ashcroft. Ashcroft and BC Highway Patrol members responded to the Highway 8 area, located the vehicle, and successfully deployed a spike belt which disabled the vehicle. The lone male occupant was arrested and held in custody, while the vehicle was recovered and returned to the owner.
Vehicle fire leads to an arson investigation
On January 26th, Ashcroft RCMP, along with Ashcroft Fire Department, attended an open area along Cornwall Road, in Ashcroft, BC, where a vehicle was on fire in a ravine. Evidence at the scene indicated that the fire had been deliberately set and an arson investigation was conducted. RCMP Forensic Services were engaged to survey the scene and a person of interest was identified. An ICBC Special Constable was also engaged to identify the burned-out vehicle and its owner. The owner was contacted and they declined to assist the police investigation. Without the cooperation of the owner, RCMP were unable to take any further investigative steps in this matter.
Thought of the day
It has been my experience while working in Ashcroft and Cache Creek that both communities are very well attuned to what usually happens in the day-to-day. This then leads, inevitably, to anything outside of ‘the norm’ sticking out like a sore thumb. When this occurs, the police are often called to assist, investigate, or maybe just to provide a policing presence, in order to rectify or improve what is occurring.
As both communities are smaller, it is easier to track the normal day-to-day than in a larger city. This is an advantage for our communities as it means issues can be identified more quickly, more often than not leading to a quicker resolution.
I would like to encourage everyone to not only continue to be aware of their community, but to get involved with your community through any interests you may have. I have been very lucky and have had recent opportunities to be a part of the Guns and Hoses charity hockey match, to work with Winding River Arts and Performance Society, and to participate in special events in both Ashcroft and Cache Creek. This involvement only came about because I chose to get know my community better and I engaged with the activities that interested me. I can tell you from my first-hand experience that however much energy and appreciation you put into these opportunities, you get back ten-fold.
My point: an engaged and aware community is a safer community.
